December Razorwire newsletter

Merry Christmas! Happy Chanukah! (Which just ended) Happy Kwanzaa!

Nollaig Shona!

We hope the preparation for the holiday season has been gentle on you this year. Luckily, for those of us here in the Seattle area, the weather has held off and kept most of the snow away. So, unlike last year, we won't be having a white Christmas but that also means we won't have cars sliding all over the road.

In this newsletter, we've included a number of holiday related things to help you celebrate. Have you ever wanted to have a traditional Irish Christmas dinner? What the 12 Irish days of Christmas are? What other types of winter customs happen around the world? We have all that and more down below.

During December we've focused on working on songs for the new album. No rushing this time. We hope to have the album out in March but if it comes down to taking a month longer then that's what we're going to do. But we are really excited about it. If you come out to one of our shows, you'll probably hear a song or two that may end up on it.

How are you spending New Years Eve? We'll be having a Blow Out At The Beach at Galway Bay Irish Pub in Ocean Shores, WA. Lots to eat, plenty to drink, free champagne at midnight, hard stompin' Celtic rock and... find out why WE call it a "blow out" at the beach. It is HIGHLY recommended you call them and make reservations. Without reservations, you may not be happy with where you are seated. Just FYI.

Who's that new face?I believe we forgot to announce to all of you our hunt for a full time drummer finally ended a couple months ago. We want to introduce you all to Judd Harris who jumped into the hot seat and started playing with us in October. And we want to extend our sincerest THANK YOU's to our good friend Megan McIntyre who really saved our butts in 2009 by filling most of the year until we find someone. You are a rock star my darlin'.

Teasing the big news: Circle this date. March 6, 2010. Why? Because we have some very, very big news which we will announce in January regarding a HUGE show we are putting together featuring some of the most popular Celtic rock bands on the West Coast. Bands from WA, OR, CA and BC. This is not just a concert. This is an event you won't want to miss! More info to come next month.

We hope you all have a WONDERFUL holiday and if you can't celebrate New Years with us, we hope you have a very safe one because we want to see you again very soon!

LIVE & WELL

Or, if you are looking to get someone a shirt that you can't get at any of our live shows, maybe your dog needs and Ockham's Razor dog bowl, or you need a coffee mug or... an Ockham's Razor thong. Well, what we are saying is, you can find PLENTY of good, last minute gifts at our Cafepress store:

Looking for something NON-Ockham's Razor related? How about the Pogues boxed set?

A 5 disk box set with a ton of previously unreleased material that was compiled by the Pogues themselves. For you Shane MacGowan fan's, check out his personal Myspace page. He's performing a number of dates with Sharon Shanon in Ireland.

Irish Christmas Traditions
If you've been in the stores lately, you've probably noticed how "generic" Christmas feels. How about adding some real tradition into your Christmas season. Take a look at some suggestions from of-ireland.info. Break out the holly, make some plum pudding and find out the reason why folks put candles in their windows.

I'm sure you've heard the 12 Days Of Christmas but, do you know how it originated or why there are 12 Days? No, Walmart didn't create it to get more shopping done. Take a look at this article from About.com about the Irish Twelve Days of Christmas.\

Where do folks celebrate Christmas with 85 degree weather? Who leaves milk for out for elves instead of Santa? Have you ever decorated mango and banana trees for Christmas? Do you take part in first-footing and Hogmanay? See how other countries in the world celebrate the winter holidays with their special traditions.

If On A Winter's Night
How many Christmas CD's do you have in your collection? Are you tired of hearing people attempt to re-do traditional songs only to be disappointed? When his label asked him to do a Christmas album, Sting proposed a little something differant.

Featuring a collection of hand-picked traditional musicians from Northern England and Scotland, "If On A Winter's Night" is a collection of carols, lullabies and hymns spanning the centuries, resulting in a haunting, spiritual and reflective musical journey.

The luck of the... Californians

It has been announced that The Chieftains will be returning to California from February 17-22 making stops in Davis, Chico, San Rafael, Cerritos, and Santa Barbara. Unfortunately, there are no stops in Oregon or Washington. You can find out more info at The Chieftains website.

October Newsletter

What’s New!

We are making our way into fall with a BUSY month of shows in October. First and foremost, October started in a very sad way for us. Our very good friend, Brian Redman, who was a bartender at Doyle’s Public House, died as a result of an accident. It devastated us but, as Brian always said, he wanted to be remembered with a rock concert. That is exactly what Doyle’s did for him. October 2nd we were honored to be one of the 18 bands that took part in the 8 hour concert in his memory. It couldn’t have been a more perfect way to remember a truly outstanding man. The wonderful thing to come out of it is the start of a foundation in Brian’s name for Tacoma musicians. Doyle’s said they will throw a concert every year to raise money for the foundation. Russ, Steve, Dave and every single employee of Doyle’s went above and beyond and we commend them!

We also returned to Vancouver, WA to Brickhouse and Irishtown & brought the rock back to St. Practice Day at Doyle’s.

When we weren’t performing, we were working on songs for our new album. If you went to any of the shows this month, you caught a seek preview of a few of them which may make the album. We’re very excited about the progress and the continued evolution.

We have added a MERCH page on our website for you to find all kinds of exclusive stuff we don’t offer at our live shows including the much requested woman’s shirts, sweatshirts, hat, buttons and more! Grab the gear, come out to our show and show off that you’re a Craic Head!

Celtic Halloween

The Celts celebrated Halloween as Samhain, 'All Hallowtide' - the 'Feast of the Dead', when the dead revisited the mortal world. The celebration marked the end of Summer and the start of the Winter months.

During the eighth century the Catholic Church designated the first day of November as 'All Saints Day ('All Hallows') - a day of commemoration for those Saints that did not have a specific day of remembrance. The night before was known as 'All Hallows Eve' which, over time, became known as Halloween.

Wanna learn some Celtic Halloween traditions? What’s up with carving Pumpkins? Know what Snap Apple is? Are you fixing Colcannon for dinner? Check out the website for the answers and more Celtic traditions.

Remembering a dear friend

On Saturday September 26, we played an incredible show at Doyle's Public House. It was our first show back at Doyle's in a long time and the vibe was alive that night. It was also a very special night because we were raising money for the Tacoma Highland Games. On top of all of that, we had a very special guest sitting in with us on djembe, Judd Harris.

All in all, the night was everything you could want in a show. You guys raised $241 (and 5 pounds) for the Games and we got to see so many of our good friends. Including our dear friend Brian Redman who came to Doyle's after he and his band, the Dirty Knockers, played their show at another venue.

I don't know how long Brian has been a bartender at Doyle's but it seems like at least for the past 3 years we've been playing there. He was always one of our biggest supporters and was always throwing obscene gestures from the bar to the stage. He was also a good friend in the times we weren't playing there and we just showed up to have a drink and joke with him.

After our show this last Saturday, after we got to see Brian one last time, he was in an accident which took his life. While Brian was the type of person who would have laughed at all of us sobbing and mourning for him... we can't help it. He was a person you never wanted to lose. Someone who could make you laugh with a funny face. Someone who wasn't scared of being... him.

We spent most of Sunday at Doyle's, which was closed for everyone but family and friends, to share our loss with everyone else who Brian weaved his way through our lives. There was a lot of pain. A lot of sorrow. It's something none of us want to face. But we were told that Brian never wanted a funeral. What he wanted... was a rock concert. Brian was a musician at heart. A rock musician. And Brian wanted all of us to forget the pain and remember the rock that was Brian.

So Doyle's Public House has arrange for a Celebration of Brian's life Friday October 2nd starting at 5pm. Music will start at 8pm featuring numerous bands who have come forward wanting to give Brian one more show. The parking lot will be tented and we will be celebrating everything that made us love the same man.

Come out to bar Brian called home, have a drink for him, and enjoy the music that ran through his veins. Tears are ok but remember... Brian would have laughed at you.

Summer time update

Just noticed its been a while since we updated this. It's been a very busy summer and some things just slipped through the cracks.

First off, it was a summer of many firsts:

1.) "Live & Well" was released: Our very first live album came out on July 14th and has been selling very steadily. We want to thank you all for taking home a little slice of a live Ockham's Razor show. Please the CD features a sneak peek at a few songs which may make it onto our next studio album (Which we are going into the studio THIS Saturday to start recording. Many people dont make the connection but we want to thank all of you who have bought a CD or T-Shirt because all the money we make off the sales of the merchandise goes directly back into the band and pays for things like the NEXT album and for hotel rooms when we play out of town and new equipment to make us sound good and the fee's associated with keeping the website running, etc. Believe me, I did the taxes last year. You'd be AMAZED and how much it takes to run even a little band like ours.

2.) NW String Summit: We were the first Irish/Celtic band to every play this event in the 8th years its been going in North Plains, OR. It's primarially a bluegrass festival and a GREAT one at that.

3.) Hempfest: Wow, what a lot of fun. We were so happy to be asked to be a part of this and what a crazy madhouse full of people it was.

4.) Pacific Northwest Scottish Highland Games: After 3 years of playing folklife festivals and other areas highland games, we were finally asked to play at the BIG ONE and we had a great time. Apparently we did so good that there are rumors that we'll be invited back next year to play even more. YAY!

We also performed at benefit shows for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), Breast Cancer Awareness and PAWS (Progressive Animal Welfare Society) and, with your help by coming out to the shows, helped raise over $10,000 for those organizations.

As we make our way into fall, we have a lot more happening.

September 5: Ockham's Razor heads back into the studio with Don Gunn (who we worked with on Ten Thousand Miles to Bedlam). Its the first of several studio sessions to get the bulk of the material down before we start polishing it up.

September 5: After a full day in the studio we join our good friends from San Francisco, Culann's Hounds, for an exciting show at the Tiger Lounge in Georgetown. It will be a full night of punked out Celtic rock.

Oct 23 - Nov 1: 6th Annual Galway Irish Pub Celtic Music Festival. "It ain't just Danny Boy anymore." The festival has exploded into 2 full weekends featuring over 20 bands the entire West Coast. Plus you can pick up the CD from last year's show which will (from what I'm told) include Ockham's Razor's version of The Devil Went Down To Georgia.

Thanks to everyone who has sent in photos of yourselves wearing your Ockham's Razor t-shirts. We have included those in our Halls of Infamy on Myspace and Facebook. If YOU have a pic, email it to us at info@seattlerazors.com.

More updates about the new album, hopefully some exclusive in-studio video as well, coming up in the weeks to come!
